For a time, anyone could tell you that Kasey died at the hands of the Ivory House (a trafficking ring in Callaxt that's been plaguing the city for decades, preying on anyone they can get their hands on). His blackened bones were found in the wreckage of his family vehicle off the side of the mountain pass, charred to bits by the engine combustion and accompanied by a vitriolic note signed with the Ivory House's more well-known local sigil. Most of the teeth had been taken, and the skull had been smashed to bits and scattered, leaving next to nothing for the CPD's forensic team to work with. Two molars, however, were found in the corpse's lap, seemingly forgotten by the killer. The dental reports run by the CPD's odontologist revealed the teeth to belong to eighteen-year-old Kasey Mikhailov. Kasey was reported officially deceased, the remaining bones were cremated, a funeral was held to commemorate the boy's already tragic and short life, and only after nothing was left of the corpse to look back on and question, Lazarus Rook made his debut. As soon as the CPD realized their mistake, they struck the reports of Kasey's death from the records. The alias 'Lazarus' was given a new, twisted meaning as the young man had apparently come back from the dead, and to this day, the CPD still doesn't know whose young bones they cremated; which of the dozens and dozens of missing young men they'd unwittingly destroyed under Kasey's name. Kasey certainly did die---maybe not literally, but figuratively, and, for a matter of days, officially. Now, the driven vigilante operates under the name Lazarus, striking names off of his list in a ruthless effort to avenge the side of him that no longer lives as a result of Callaxt's poison.
